Junglekeepers: Guardians of the Amazon

Founded by Paul Rosolie, Junglekeepers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the Amazon rainforest. Their mission is to employ preventative solutions to protect tropical forest ecosystems before they are degraded. Junglekeepers focuses on the Madre de Dios region in Peru, one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Over the past decade, Junglekeepers has provided proof of concept for sustainably protecting more than 77,000 acres of land.

Work and Impact

Junglekeepers employs and trains local and indigenous community members to actively protect the land that is ultimately theirs. Their Forest Rangers monitor concessions, maintain trails, and report any illegal activity occurring on the land. The organization also uses the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) system to efficiently respond to illegal activities and collect comprehensive data on the condition of the land and wildlife.

One of Junglekeepers' key projects is the Las Piedras Corridor, which connects several of Peru's most important protected areas. This corridor is home to indigenous communities such as the Yora, Mascho-Piro, Matsigenka, Harakmbut, Yine, and some of the last voluntarily isolated nomadic tribes. By protecting this corridor, Junglekeepers helps safeguard millions of heartbeats within one of the last remaining pristine rainforests in the Amazon.
