History and Mission

Rainforest Connection (RFCx) was founded in 2015 by Topher White, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer and an Engineering Hero recognized by the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). RFCx is a nonprofit tech start-up committed to applying cutting-edge technology to protect the world's ancient forests and wildlife. Their mission is to develop and leverage conservation technology to empower partners to protect threatened rainforests from illegal activities such as logging and poaching.

Work and Impact

RFCx's innovative approach involves transforming recycled cell phones into autonomous, solar-powered listening devices that can remotely monitor and detect illegal logging activity. These devices send real-time alerts for chainsaws, trucks, and other signs of incursion, enabling rapid response and more effective patrols. By partnering with local NGOs, indigenous tribes, and governments, RFCx helps protect vast areas of rainforest and monitor biodiversity.

Since its inception, RFCx has made significant strides in conservation efforts. They have deployed their technology in over 115 protected reserves across 37 countries, monitoring more than 736,200 hectares (equivalent to over 1,819,189 acres) of land. Their systems have detected 4,208 species, including 408 near-threatened, vulnerable, endangered, and critically endangered species. RFCx's work has been instrumental in protecting the Brazilian Tembé indigenous people's native rainforest in Brazil, covering 60,000 hectares.
